Thad looked up from his eggs and eyeballed Jake. "What?" "Thad," Jake sighed, rubbing his hand rapidly over his face. "I don't like the tension between us. You can't keep ignoring me forever."

Thad sighed and pushed his plate across the table. "Okay, Dad," he said quietly. "To be honest, I'll tell you, I don't want to talk about this."

Jake nodded. Well, at least he was making some progress. Thad was talking. "Look, Thad, I understand that this whole thing is hard to accept--"

"Accept! How can you even think that I'd accept the fact that my father is gay? That he lied to my mother all those years and never really loved her--"

Jake took hold of Thad's shoulders, making him look Jake directly in the eye. "Stop right there, son!" Jake's eyes filled with tears as he choked up. "I loved your mother all those years. I love her still. If she hadn't died, I'd be by her side, married to her for the rest of my life. None of our lives was a lie! She was the love of my life, my heart."

Thad lowered his eyes and slumped forward, looking defeated. "I don't get it, then, Dad." He shook his head. "How then, if you loved Mom, did all this happen? Cade, Dad? A guy?" He gestured with his hands, then crossed his arms and sat back in the chair, staring at Jake for an explanation.

"I can't explain it, Thad." Jake sighed, sitting down in a chair with a fresh cup of coffee. He paused, judging whether Thad was ready for the truth. He decided Thad was old enough for some man to man talk. He plunged into his explanation. "I just connected with him on an emotional level that I've never connected on with anyone, even your mom." He was quick to point out to Thad that that was not Molly's fault. "She was the most loving and gracious woman I've ever met, and I was blessed to have her love for almost twenty years. My love for Cade doesn’t diminish, in any way, my love for your mother. Thad, we don't choose who we love."

Thad glanced up at Jake, possibly seeing him as a man rather than an authority figure for the first time. He nodded. It was a moment of growth for the young man. Jake knew that for Thad to step outside himself was a huge step for the teenager.

"Okay, Dad. This is a surprise, but I love you, and I understand that I have to back off and give it time and space."

The lump in Jake's throat was almost choking him. Tears welled up in his eyes again as he asked, "Has it been horrible at school this week, buddy?"

Thad was quiet for a minute and then met Jake's question head on. "It hasn't been the best week, but I found out that there are some really shitty kids who are narrow-minded, and there are some really great kids who are supportive. I guess life is always going to be like that.
